Our Story

One of their first dates was to a discount grocery store. Their second, to a cemetery. They weren’t sure if they were “dates” at the time - after all, Henry spent their grocery store outing buying charcuterie board supplies for a date with another girl. This, to Sarah, was as clear an indication as any that she was stuck in the dreaded “friend zone.” But then again, they did sit next to each other almost every day of training - It was the fall of 2017 in Chicago, and they were in the thick of an intensive, two-week new employee training for their first jobs out of college. And then days later, at a gathering of employees in their “class” of new hires, Henry complained to Sarah that charcuterie girl was irritating him - She wouldn’t stop speaking French (she was not French). It was the fault of the apps, Henry and Sarah decided - Bumble, Tinder, Hinge - so they vowed then and there to delete the apps, together. That had to move Sarah a few steps out of friend territory, right? Weeks later, Sarah all but given up on Henry, the two found themselves at another corporate bonding event. They weren’t talking, and then suddenly they were. They were with the group, and then they weren’t. Standing off to the side, they somehow mustered the courage to open up. They gushed about their joint interest in one another. They kissed. Things moved quickly after that. Soon, Henry was calling Sarah his girlfriend. Not long after, Sarah blurted out “I love you” (and Henry said it back, to her relief). They spent their first three and a half years together in Chicago, falling deeper in love over walks through Lincoln Park, hummus in Andersonville, micro brews in Bridgeport, and deep dish cookies in Southport. Life was good, but COVID made it a little less good. They decided to make a change. They would trade the Chicago wind for somewhere with a little more sun. They set their sights on Austin. In the summer of 2021, they moved into a bright, two-floor condo in Austin’s “Judge’s Hill” neighborhood. As much love as they had for Chicago, it took them a while to get back. In the spring of 2023, they made a vow: This was the summer they would finally make their return. It was just for a short visit - Labor Day weekend. But over those next few days, they packed in everything they had missed during their last two years in Austin. Their itinerary, importantly, included one of those favorite Lincoln Park strolls — which Henry was a little too insistent on taking. Sarah’s suspicions started to simmer — especially when Henry grew uncharacteristically quiet and glued to his phone. He dictated the exact path they should take through the park’s winding trails – another clue to Sarah that something about her usually go-with-the-flow boyfriend was seriously off. And then he reached into his pocket. Down on one knee, he asked her to spend his life with her. You know the rest. Sarah and Henry had passed weddings at the Allan House many times – during evening strolls and scooters through the neighborhood. The historic mansion sat a few short blocks from their house, nestled on a quiet street near the capital. They entertained other venue, options, but in the back of their mind, they always knew it was the one. We can’t wait to finally experience one of those Allan House weddings we always marveled at, and to have it be a wedding all our own. And we’re elated that you’ll be there to join us. Love, Sarah and Henry
